Varanasi ghat

Varanasi has been one of the most popular cities in India to have been artists’ muse. Mark Twain wrote, ‘Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even that legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put together. These words seem to encapsulate the soul of the city and the magic of Varanasi (also called Benaras or Banaras) that has been captured over centuries by artists, poets, writers, and musicians, and explorers. Varanasi happens to be the most painted city when compared to any other in India, as confirmed by city-based art historian, Dr Pramila Lochan. Some of the known contemporary artists who have made Varanasi their muse include Paresh Maity, Manu Parekh and M. F. Hussain. More recently, Artflute brings to you a collection of Varanasi paintings by artist Amit Bhar who us particularly drawn to the city’s personality which is its spirituality, Banaras ghat paintings by Dibyendu Ukil and Balu Sadalge who capture realistic impressions of Varanasi.
